Well, at least the producers of “Family Guy” are about to find out if Emmy voters really have a good sense of humor — especially an appreciation for the kind of bawdy joshing that’s a signature of its outrageous show. They decided to get voters to pay attention to their ploy to move “Family Guy” from the race for best animated program to the lofty contest for best comedy series by insulting, tweaking and shocking them. Only one other cartoon show has ever made it into the comedy contest: “The Flinstones,” which lost to “The Jack Benny Program” in 1961.

Check out the DVD “For Your Consideration” campaign package recently shipped to all 14,000 TV academy members, including images that can be seen by clicking on the “continued” link at the bottom of this post. Featured are these zinger messages: “We peaked three years ago, so by your logic we should get an Emmy now” and ” ‘Family Guy’: with Tina Fey! (Not really, we just want an Emmy).”

Three episodes are contained on the enclosed DVD: “I Dream of Jesus,” “Road to Germany” and “Family Guy.”

Family Guy has been entertaining us for over ten years now. The show has become an essential part of our Sunday night entertainment and despite its long run it has been able to maintain the freshness and the charm in every new episode. And now there is some more good news that has just been confirmed by Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the show. The very talented Seth has revealed that there are plans to make Family Guy into a movie.

Now that is really something exciting and worth looking forward to. Imagine the Griffin family, as they continue to display their stupid but funny behavior on the big screen. I am sure the movie is going to be a laugh riot. I am already quite anxious about when the movie is going to be actually made.

This is not the first time that an animated show is being made into a movie. Earlier, shows like The Simpsons and South Park have been made into movies and they have been quite successful also. Once Family Guy movie is made, it is also going to be a huge success as I am sure that the millions of fans of the show are definitely going to turn up in large numbers to watch their favorite characters on the big screen.

However, there is still a lot of time before the movie is released as according to MacFarlane, although the plans have been finalized, there is no time to devote to the making of the movie. The creator has further said that they are in the initial stages of creating the movie and as yet they have no idea of the storyline that the movie is supposed to follow. Also, Seth is so busy with weekly episodes of his animated series that, he rarely find time for anything else and as we all are well aware, making an animated movie does require a lot of time.

But we do not need to get worried as Seth has himself said that there definitely is going to be a Family Guy movie. However, he cannot commit as to when the movie will actually come. So till the time Family Guy reaches the theaters, we can enjoy the animated series on television!

Lauren Conrad is building up her ’self’ pile with a guest stint on “Family Guy“. The star of reality series “The Hills” is animated as Brian the dog’s love interest and People has the first look of her cartoon version.

The picture is taking on the promotional photo of “The Hills“, featuring Brian in Audrina Patridge’s position and Stewie posing as Whitney Port. Conrad will fill in the voice herself for the May 3 episode called “We Love You Conrad”.

The synopsis for the episode is read: “After drowning his sorrows when he learns his ex-girlfriend Jillian is getting married, Brian discovers that he has hooked up with The Hills star Lauren Conrad. Brian wants out of the relationship until he realizes that Conrad may be the perfect match for him, if only he is willing to let Jillian go. “

Creator Seth MacFarlane himself told People, “She dates Brian for an episode. I’m not going to spoil it!”

This is not the first time Conrad’s voice is heard on “Family Guy”. She voiced one of the girls in “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County”, the show that Peter was watching, in a 2006 episode.

What’s more shocking: that Brian came out as an atheist on Family Guy this week, or that Family Guy added a even more subversive humor in amongst its typical irreverence? The list of non believers on television is moderate, but they do exist. The issue is that atheism is never really endorsed. South Park is an equal opportunity offender and never really comes down definitively on either side of the issue. Lisa Simpson was an early TV non-believer, but when challenged she came to accept that she may not understand everything. Even a modern day non-believer like Dr. Gregory House is not really an atheist. He’s a non-believer, a term that is far easier for the mass market to swallow.

But the truth is that around 16% of our nation identifies itself as non-religious. That’s a sizable chunk of the population, and I’m interested in how people will react to Sunday night’s Family Guy episode. It should also be noted that the episode was touted as the reuniting of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast, and that turned out to be a “B” story with only a brief moment or two of chuckles.

Fans may want to defend Family Guy, but the show has never really delved deep into a hot topic such as atheism. Any push button moments are offset by a cut to Conway Twitty or Peter holding his scraped knee for two minutes. What was interesting about the Brian as atheist story is that while played up for the humor, there’s a level of truth in his plight. Sure Brian fakes loving god in order to get booze, and that’s very Family Guy moment, but much of the episode that felt more like South Park mixed with Bill Maher. The notion that an atheist is “Worse Than Hitler” did not originate with Seth McFarlane

It will be interesting to see how people perceive the episode. Often the vocal hardened Christians immediately exclaim that it’s Christians who are the most derided, especially by atheists. But that’s like saying more white kids made the football team in my hometown in Western New York. Of course that’s true, there are far more of them. There are more Christians in the world than atheists, and Christianity is not a taboo. When feeling subversive any creative artist can take pot shots at Christians to add some shock value. Even atheists prefer that when Christians are made fun of it be done with some intelligence.

I’m not sure what I expected out of Brian’s story, but what I didn’t expect is that he would still be an atheist by the end of the episode. It’s a ballsy move to out a character so explicitly, and then keep them in the same frame of mind at the end. Most of the time, as was the case with Lisa Simpson, there’s a nice middle ground that all can agree on. Then everyone agrees and the non-believers and Christians hug in an embrace of tolerance.

But Family Guy has cut right to the heart of something important., and it’s upsetting that as a society we so ready to accept atheists as evil, and then act accordingly. But when called on this there’s usually a rise that turns the argument into the tried and true, “but atheists are far meaner to Christians.” That doesn’t explain why the 16% of people who would identify themselves as non-religious never check the “other” box and fill in “atheist” on a job application. You might as well write that you’re a serial rapist.

Yet talk to the average man on the street and it’s hard to find anyone willing to vocalize hatred towards atheists. Or maybe I’m just be so damn charming that no one can hate me. My general perception is that society’s derision for the atheist is a mob mentality. For Family Guy to not only take this issue on, but to remain stoic in the stance of its character, feels like a significant moment. I doubt anyone is going to take note though. Ellen may have been subsequently cancelled, but the show is still heralded as a watershed moment for homosexuals on television.

Sure the episode was funny, but I have to wonder what the mob reaction to Family Guy’s out and atheist tale will be.

This Sunday, March 29, “Family Guy” will include Star Trek fanatics and spoof them in the episode called “Not All Dogs Go to Heaven“. The Griffin family attends the annual Star Trek convention, Stewie attends a Q and A session with the main cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. Stewie devises a plan to kidnap the cast and builds a transporter to beam the entire cast of Star Trek to his bedroom so they can spend a fun-filled day together in Quahog.

Filling voice of these Star Trek cast are the actual actors for the series. It includes Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Wil Wheaton, Denise Crosby, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes. “They were all very game. We had fun playing with who they are,” said showrunner David Goodman.

“It’s easy to mock things that take themselves too seriously. Star Trek is both wonderful and pompous at the same time. I really am a die-hard Trekkie, but there are moments in Star Trek where it takes itself very seriously.”

Also in the episode, Meg becomes extremely religious, and tries to convert Brian from Atheism. “There are two stories going on in the episode,” David further telling E! “One story involves Meg and Brian. Meg finds God. And she finds religion and is giving Brian a hard time for his atheism.”

More spoilers on the Sunday episode based on David’s story can be read on E! Online. Apart from the Star Trek story arc, upcoming episodes of the animation will take on “The Empire Strikes Back”, “Return of the Jedi”, “Tootsie”, “Battlestar Galactica” and “Facts of Life”. David explained, “(Facts of Life) is a favorite show of (creator) Seth MacFarlane’s, and I think eventually you’ll be seeing some more of Facts of Life…”

Sunday’s episode of Family Guy, “Not All Dogs Go to Heaven” reunites the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, who “couldn’t have been more game to spoof themselves,” according to show runner and Star Trek fan David Goodman.

Find out more about this episode and what supergeeky fun lies ahead for Family Guy…

What Goes Down: “There are two stories going on in the episode,” explains David, who appears as a Star Trek geek, er, fan in the convention scene. “One story involves Meg and Brian. Meg finds God. And she finds religion and is giving Brian a hard time for his atheism.”

The second story involves Stewie and the family going to the Star Trek convention. According to Goodman, when Stewie doesn’t get his question answered, “He buys plans for a transporter and beams the cast into his room.”

Who Drops By and Why: Among those appearing as themselves: Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Denise Crosby, Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn and everyone’s favorite former child star/geek blogger Wil Wheaton. “They were all very game. We had fun playing with who they are,” says David, who says it’s easy to mock sci-fi characters because “It’s easy to mock things that take themselves too seriously. Star Trek is both wonderful and pompous at the same time. I really am a die-hard Trekkie, but there are moments in Star Trek where it takes itself very seriously.”

Nerd Alert: Indeed, superserious Trekkies will love the inside joke on this episode that revolves around a real argument die-hard fans often have. David explains: “In the episode [laughs] ‘Relix’ in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the character Scotty is pulled out of suspended animation, and he says, ‘Oh, did Captain Kirk come to pick me up?’ And then we find out after The Next Generation ended that Captain Kirk died and Scotty was there. So why in that episode did he think that Captain Kirk was going to pick him up if he saw him die later? And, of course, the answer is they hadn’t made the movie yet and made that decision. But there is a possible explanation, which I offer in the guise of a cartoon character, so I was very pleased [laughs] to do that.”

What’s to Come: Upcoming Family Guy episodes, according to David, will take on The Empire Strikes Back (look for it at the end of next season) and Return of the Jedi as well as Tootsie (yes, Tootsie!), Battlestar Galactica (probably as a gag, rather than a whole episode) and maybe even more Facts of Life (hello George Clooney?!) references.

“[Facts of Life] is a favorite show of Seth MacFarlane’s, and I think eventually you’ll be seeing some more of Facts of Life…,” he adds. There is also an episode coming up that will only feature Stewie and Brian. (And let’s not forgot about Stewie showing up on a Bones episode in May during one of Booth’s hallucinations.)

Which upcoming episode are you most stoked about? Who else should they spoof?

Kanye West owes it to being “Family Guy” fan and his talent in rap, when he was signed to fill a voice for one of the characters in “The Cleveland Show“. The established rapper was invited for a reading for the spin-off to “Family Guy” as Kenny West, a not so mega rapper, and passed. He had even recorded an episode for the FOX animation.

“It was surprising to us that (he) was so into it that he came to the table (read), and wonderfully surprising how cool he was, how funny he was and how unassuming he was,” Mike Henry who voices some characters and executive produce the show said. “He’s just a great presence.”

Haris also noted that Kanye is a big fan of the show, since he mentioned on his blog about the spin-off and invited creator Seth MacFarlane to his house a couple of years ago.”We knew he was a big fan, and a lot of us are fans of his,” Haris said.

Executive producer Richard Appel also raved about Kanye’s participation, revealing that the rapper even chipped in idea for one of the rap lines. “Before we came to the table … there was only one line he didn’t love, and he came up with another idea and in a completely modest, nice way said, ‘Would you mind if I changed just this one line?’” Appel said. “And our feeling was, how many raps have we written? One? And how many has he written? Be our guest!”

“The Cleveland Show” is prepared for fall season premiere and Kanye’s episode will be aired in 2010. No word yet whether Kenny West will be made as a main character, which will make Kanye as a regular in the show but the rapper has expressed his willingness to participate further. “He said he’d be glad to (be back). I said we could write him in to the next 21 episodes!” Appel continued. Other stars lending voice for the animated show are Taraji P. Henson, Nia Long, and Sanaa Lathan.
